In IELTS Writing Task 1, candidates are required to write a report based on an illustration. The given visual can take various forms, such as a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, map, or flowchart (also known as a process diagram). Additionally, there is a mixed or combined type, where two different visual representations are presented together—such as a table with a pie chart or a line graph with a table.
Approach to Mixed/Combined Illustrations
When dealing with mixed or combined illustrations, the approach differs slightly from other types. Since the word limit is 150 words, it is essential to maintain brevity and avoid excessive detail on any single diagram. The structure should be as follows:
- Paraphrasing the Question: Begin by rewriting the question in your own words, briefly summarizing the purpose of each illustration. This provides a clear introduction to what the data represents.
- Overview: Present a general summary, highlighting the most noticeable trends or key features from both diagrams. Focus on aspects such as the highest and lowest values, maximum and minimum trends, or any significant contrasts.
- Body Paragraphs:
- Dedicate one paragraph to each visual representation.
- Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence specifying which diagram is being discussed.
- Include two major details per diagram, ensuring numerical accuracy and relevant comparisons.
Important Considerations
- Unlike other writing tasks, a concluding paragraph is not required in Writing Task 1. The report should be concise and focused solely on presenting the data.
- Do not provide your opinion in Writing Task 1. The report must remain objective and purely descriptive.
- Avoid informal words such as "can't," "don't," "won't," etc. Use formal and academic language to ensure a professional tone.
Scoring Criteria for 7+ Bands
Your response is evaluated based on four key criteria, each carrying equal weight (25%):
- Task Achievement: Ensure that the task is completed effectively. The reader, who has not seen the graph, should be able to visualize the data through your description. Identifying and accurately describing key features is essential.
- Coherence and Cohesion: Organize sentences logically and use linking words where necessary to ensure smooth readability and comprehension.
- Lexical Resource: Use varied and appropriate vocabulary to describe trends. For instance, instead of repeating "decrease," incorporate synonyms like "decline" or "drop" to maintain linguistic diversity. The choice of words should be precise and relevant to the task.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Demonstrate a strong command of grammar by using a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences. Avoid grammatical errors to maintain clarity and professionalism in your writing.
To achieve a 7+ band score, consistent practice tests are essential. Regularly attempt sample questions and analyze high-scoring model answers to refine your approach. Focus on accuracy, structure, and clarity to enhance your performance.
By adhering to these guidelines, you can craft a well-structured, cohesive, and high-scoring response for IELTS Writing Task 1.
